Impossible donc de r\u00e9sister \u00e0 la derni\u00e8re enqu\u00eate en date de Joe Leaphorn, le l\u00e9gendaire lieutenant de la police navajo&#8230; \u00e0 la retraite depuis un certain temps d\u00e9j\u00e0.<br \/> Un de ses anciens coll\u00e8gues lui envoit un beau jour une photo tir\u00e9e d&#8217;un magazine. Sur le clich\u00e9 on distingue une couverture narrative traditionnelle. Un objet&nbsp; excep- tionnel, unique qui retrace dans son tissage la noire p\u00e9riode de la d\u00e9portation du peuple najavo.<br \/> Seulement cette couverture est cens\u00e9e avoir brul\u00e9e avec son mus\u00e9e vingt ans plus t\u00f4t et un meurtre \u00e9tait li\u00e9 \u00e0 cet incendie. A l&#8217;\u00e9poque Leaphorn et son coll\u00e8gue avaient particip\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#8217;enqu\u00eate.<br \/> Bien s\u00fbr il s&#8217;agit peut-\u00eatre d&#8217;une copie et de toute fa\u00e7on cela ne concerne en rien l&#8217;ex-lieutenant seulement&#8230; il s&#8217;ennuie. Et lorsque le coll\u00e8gue en question disparait, l&#8217;int\u00e9r\u00eat de Leaphorn s&#8217;\u00e9veille vraiment.<br \/> Cette dix-neuvi\u00e8me enqu\u00eate de la saga navajo reprend le concept du sorcier changeforme qui meurt pour renaitre sous une autre apparence. Notion sur laquelle Hillerman avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 brod\u00e9 dans &#8220;le peuple de l&#8217;ombre&#8221; &#8211; enqu\u00eate men\u00e9e en son temps par Jim Chee. L&#8217;intrigue est bien men\u00e9, les personnages attachants, le cadre du <em>Dinehta<\/em>, le pays navajo, toujours aussi fascinant, le tout dans ce style ethno-po\u00e9tique qui est la marque de l&#8217;auteur.
